Tran Bien Temple of Literature is a Confucian temple located in Bien Hoa, the capital city of the Dong Nai Province. This is the symbol of the tradition of learning, spirit and culture of the Vietnamese people in southern Vietnam.
History
Built in 1715, like the Temple of Literature in Ha Noi, Tran Bien Temple of Literature worshiped Vietnamese celebrities and Confucius, and also was a college for students in the South. This structure showed the tradition of encouraging and enjoying study of southerners.
In December 1861, when French troops occupied Bien Hoa, this temple was destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1998 so that the generations of today understand the history of Vietnamese education. The new Tran Bien Temple of Literature has architectural style of the Temple of Literature in Ha Noi.
Architecture
With total area of 15ha, Tran Bien Temple of Literature consists of architectural works of three-door gate, stele house, Constellation of Literature Pavilion (Khue Van Cac), Thien Quang Well, Dai Thanh Gate, Confucius Temple and the main temple.
The main temple built according to the traditional architecture with 3 compartment and 2 lean-toes worships President Ho Chi Minh, Vietnamese celebrities such as Chu Van An, Nguyen Trai, Nguyen Du, Nguyen Binh Khiem, Le Quy Don, Nguyen Dinh Chieu, etc. Especially, 18kg soil and 18 litres water taken from Hung Kings Temple in Phu Tho Province to symbolize 18 Hung Kings are displayed in the main temple.
In the front of the main temple exists two houses displaying products of 4 traditional craft villages of copper, carpentry, stone, pottery crafts in Bien Hoa Dong Nai; and ancient documents, books on the history, culture, people, land of Bien Hoa Dong Nai.
There is also traditional house displaying photos and documents on Tran Bien Temple of Literature.
