Long Xuyen is the capital city of An Giang Province, in the Mekong Delta region of south-western Vietnam. It is the second most prosperous city in south-western Vietnam, just after Can Tho city.

Long Xuyen is well known for its authentic floating market, one of the most bustling floating markets in the Mekong Delta region with hundreds of small boats barging and jostling for space as owners attempt to sell their goods.

How to get to Long Xuyen?

It is located at approximately 1,950 km south of Hanoi, 189 km from Ho Chi Minh City, and 45 km from the Cambodian border. The place can be reached by car, boat or plane. There is a direct flight between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho. One can rent a private car with driver at any travel agent or hotel in Ho Chi Minh city. Bus tickets are available at Mien Tay bus station.

What to explore in Long Xuyen?

Long Xuyen church

Long Xuyen church was built between 1966 and 1973. This Catholic Church is an outstanding religious site in Long Xuyen and also one of the largest churches in Mekong Delta. The church attracts visitors by its modern architecture, a 50m- high bell tower and a big hall that can includes 1,000 worshippers.

Long Xuyen floating market

Long Xuyen floating market is another attraction in this travel destination, where you can sit on a small boat to enjoy the floating stalls in colorful background of various fruits. On the brown water flow, hundreds of sampans loaded with fresh produce are arranged by groups here and there, crossed by small service boats of café or soups.

All seasonal produce from the Mekong Delta such as rice, vegetables, fruit, fish, and poultry are gathered here before being distributed to local markets.

Tiger Island (ong ho)

Tiger Island or ong ho in Vietnamese is located in My Hoa Hung Commune, Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province. The island had been formed by the silt of Hau River.

According to the inhabitants living in this island, the origin of name Ong Ho is because in the past there are many tigers and panthers residing on an area of rushes and reeds. After many years of accumulation of the silt of Hau River, Ong Ho Island was raised and people began to settle their living on the island. However, the name Tiger Island was still remained until now.

Established in the middle of the fruit garden on the island, the wooden house, where the artifacts of President Ton Duc Thang are currently displayed, was built in 1887 by Mr. Ton Van De, President Ton Duc Thang’s father.

Coming to Ong Ho Island, visitors will have a chance to enjoy the taste of various fruits, specialty meals and listen to artists’ songs, and music, get acquainted with the life of the Southern people, see the fish rafts on the edge of the islet all along the Hau River.
